Article content Greater Petawawa Civitan Club president John VandenBaar holds up big bass about to be weighed as a candidate for the ‘big fish’ prize at the Battle of the Bass on the Ottawa River on Saturday, Aug. This advertisement has not loaded yet, but your article continues below. The tournament is catch and release and is chiefly organized by Petawawa Civitan President John VandenBaar and Allan Stewart of Allan’s Bait and Tackle. “We did the best we could do and next year will be really kick ass as long as we are all vaccinated and our community is COVID free, including the new variant,” Hammel said. The pandemic prohibited the some of the tournament’s usual staples like participants and families being able to gather together under a large tent and the serving of alcohol. Hammel noted the service clubs had to scramble to be ready for the event with so many participants and with the extra precautions required because of COVID. “We were extremely nervous that we wouldn’t even have 20 teams and then it just boomed.” “The response we had to the fishing tournament was amazing,” said Greater Petawawa Civitan Club secretary Donna Hammel. As it turned out, they need not have worried as 46 teams took part. Not being able to hold the event in 2020 combined with the pandemic being ongoing this summer had tournament organizers concerned about a lack of participation.
